Mary’s gaze is directly on you, as if she wants you to look her in the eye and think. The Greek letters above – MP 0Y – tell us that she is the mother of God. Baby Jesus, identified by the letters “IC XC,” does not look at his mother or at us on this icon; instead, He looks away, seeing something that scared Him – so scared that He ran fast enough to His mother so He lost one of His little sandals. What does he see? His destiny, symbolized by the angels who carry the instruments of His Passion. The angel on the left, Michaël, carries the lance that they are going to pierce, an urn filled with bile, and the reed and the sponge that will carry it to his lips. The angel on the right, Gabriel, carries a cross and four nails. His earthly consolation and ours is in his mother, and while he clings to her, she invites us with her eyes.
